October Clasico – Real Madrid vs Barcelona

October Clasico – Real Madrid vs Barcelona

This weekend, the first match of El Clasico will be played on Saturday evening as Real Madrid will host its biggest rival Barcelona. Unsurprisingly, the two teams occupied the first two positions in the league table where Barcelona is now leading with 27 points, three ahead of Real Madrid.

However, the hosts are unbeaten this season as Barcelona lost one match but Madrid got more points overall after drawing three. Both played midweek Champions League matches with Real Madrid beating Dortmund 5-2 and Barcelona beating Bayern Munich 4-1 on Wednesday evening.

Carlo Ancelotti celebrated his 200th game in charge of Real Madrid last weekend with a 2-1 win over Celta Vigo and will be looking for three more points in this home game to draw with Barcelona in table top. They are currently unbeaten in their previous 42 games, so they are on course to equal Barcelona’s 43-game record.

Real Madrid haven’t lost at home since April 2023, a run of 40 games, with 33 wins. Another statistic in their favor is that they have lost only one of the last five teams they have hosted. Coach Ancelotti’s concern is the fact that goalkeeper Courtois and midfielder Rodrygo will both miss the game.

New Kylian Mbappe is starting to find his footing in the Spanish capital but last season’s star player, Jude Bellingham, has yet to hit the ground running this season. This is the 16th Clasico for coach Carlo Ancelotti, so it is better than his opponent in other players, Hansi Flick, who will face this great competition for the first time.

Barcelona and Flick have been boosted by the return of Gavi and Fermin Lopez, who returned to action in their 5-1 win over Sevilla at the weekend. This win was their 13th in the last 14 La Liga games and they will be hoping that their good form will allow them to avoid a fifth straight defeat against their H2H rivals.

There is no doubt that goals have not been a problem for Barcelona this season, they have scored 3.5 points per game in their four away games in La Liga. They have also scored at least twice in every ten games they have played and have 33 goals so far this season, a huge jump from Real Madrid’s 21 goals. Home defense Ter Stegen, Ferran Torres, Andreas Christiansen and Ronald Aurajo will therefore need to use their top players.

Vini Junior and Raphina both scored hat-tricks in midweek in the Champions League so will certainly be players to keep an eye on during their clash on Saturday evening. Lucas Vasquez and Fermin Lopez both scored in this game last season and are good in their respective roles.

Real Madrid have won five of the last ten, while Barcelona have won the previous five, so there is little to choose between them compared to recent history. The last tie in the league was played in 2019 when the two played out a goalless draw in Barcelona. These have been high-scoring games with nine of the last ten meetings where three or more goals have been scored. There have been goals in each half of 12 of the last 13 games so we can approach this game expecting to be entertaining.
